My Oscars thoughts

1) Why is Beyonce singing in French? There are lots of French singers, get one of them. Why is she singing a song that is supposed to be sung by a male tenor? I do not approve. Of the idea or her very lame attempt at a French accent.

2) Could Sean Penn be any more self-important?

3) The LAMEST award of the night: a "Humanitarian" Award for film preservation and a fund that protects people solely involved in the motion picture industry. Thus proving that movie people are in fact just as self-centered as we all imagined.

New York germs

I love my government-contracted job in that I get all the little stupid holidays off. Not that Presidents' Day is stupid or anything, but I remember being in school and thinking "if it's a holiday, then why am I in class?" Fortunately I was able to take a very special bus trip up to NY to see the former roommate and spend some time in a glorious city. After I spend a weekend there, I realize that DC is not so much a city as one gigantic suburb. But I digress...

We had fun singing karaoke and drinking rum on Friday, Saturday consisted of wandering around and hanging out in cute pseudo-Irish pub, and on Sunday we saw a musical and the Gates. The Gates were pretty entertaining, if for no other reason than everyone in New York, city-dwellers and out of towners alike, were talking about them. You can just imagine the Southern accent: "Y'all, we flew all the way up here to see these here Gates..." Don't lie, you know you just really wanted to get some good shopping in. However, I am now feeling a bit under the weather after my long weekend away, and since everyone is blaming the Gates for all of the crowds, etc in New York, I'm going to blame my illness on them as well. I obviously have Gate germs.

**This post has been brought to by NY germs, Nyquil, and my oh-so-lovely down comforter.**

Happy Valentine's Day, you poor schmucks

I really feel sorry for boys on Valentine's Day. Seriously. I'm certainly not one of those girls that is bitter about the holiday, or feeling sorry for myself that I didn't get flowers (I got a pretty new pin from my mom, can't do better than that!). I just think that guys have enough of a bad time trying not to screw things up with their ladies on a regular basis, and that V-day adds immense pressure to that problem. What sort of flowers to buy? How much to spend? Are we in a teddy bear or jewelry phase of the relationship? It seems quite unfair to imagine that some average guy is going to be able to pour out everything he thinks and feels about a girl in the form of gifts specifically given on February 14th. That is just mean. So for all you poor guys out there...good luck, you're going to need it.

Sugar Low

In celebration of Valentine's weekend, my roommate and I hosted a girly slumber party. This is the sort of thing that I haven't participated in since I was maybe 14, but deep down we all know that even 25 year old semi-adult women still want to just spend a night eating junk food, painting our nails, gossiping and watching Sex and the City: Season Six.

Trouble is, the 14 year old party kicked my 25 five year old ass. It is a special sort of transition when you wake up the next day ill from not the alcohol, but the vast amount of sugar and other crap consumed until 4 am. Top that off with a sinus headache, and you have me...high on pepto bismal and allergy medicine, feeling more than a little loopy and still not quite so right in the tummy. But it was still worth it!
A little hint of last night's sugar high that led to today's low: heart-shaped chocolate cake with appropriate Valentine's sprinkles; rice krispy treats; and an ice cream bar that included chocolate syrup, caramel sauce, whipped cream, raspberries, and nuts. And the pièce de résistance: the roommate's drink recipe for a Wonder Woman (1 part Bailey's + 1 part Grand Marnier + 1 part Tia Maria = one messed up sugary night).

The First One

So here goes...

I have debated getting a weblog for quite some time now. Many friends have them, I read other people's regularly, but I have always held back. Until now. I still don't know why I want one...is it narcissism to think that other people really want to read what I have to say? Or maybe just a place to enter my random thoughts or vent a little? Maybe this will be my own version of "rants and raves" which I have yet to post on either. I may chicken out, but at least I will not have missed out. We'll see where it goes.
